- From LaserBoard MUG (A0139)
-
- With regard to all the supporting files posted by General Computer the other
- day, I have to respond that we have been VERY happy with GCC lately.
-
- About two months ago, we purchased a HyperDrive FX40 and HyperCharger 020/68881
- for use in the Macintosh SE running the LaserBoard BBS. At the time of order,
- we were told that the units would take roughly 1-2 weeks to be shipped. One
- week later, both the drive and the card arrived. This is the first time any
- hard drive company has shipped a unit to us by the promised date (that includes
- Peak, LoDOWN, Logic Arrays-ProApp, and SuperMac).
-
- •The HyperDrive FX40 is the quietest drive we've used. With the fan in the Mac
- SE running, you can't tell the HyperDrive is even turned on, and with the fan
- off, as with a MacPlus, the HyperDrive doesn't even change noise level when
- accessing data. The FX/40 is also among the fastest drives we've used.
- (99,99,18 are the DiskTimer II results). Actual boot time, even with many INIT
- files and a StartupScreen, is extremely rapid. Utilities with the drive have
- been useful and bug-free. The drive has been running 24 hours a day and remains
- quite cool to the touch. The plastic case had one minor defect on delivery, but
- appearance of the drive is pleasant - the unit sits vertically much like the
- DataFrame units but is less subject to toppling over as it is wide at the base
- and thins as it rises.
-
- Small complaints about the drive: 1) the SCSI address setting is software
- controlled - should you want to hook the unit up to a system which already has
- other hard drives attached, you might have to disconnect the other drives,
- reconfigure the HyperDrive's address, and then reconnect the entire line. A bit
- much considering that a few other drives have placed a selector switch on the
- back of the unit (e.g. Peak, Jasmine). 2) I think (this is personal opinion)
- all hard drives should standardize to the 25 pin SCSI port that the Mac
- uses...HyperDrive has chosen the Centronics 50-pin port. If only one such drive
- exists in a daisy chain, the drive can be last in the chain. If more than one
- such drive exists, however, one must hunt around to find the appropriate cable,
- adding about $30-40 to the cost of such a drive. This is because nearly all of
- these drives (GCC's included) come with Centronics to DB25 cable. I'd suggest
- that GCC (and others) using the other standard have an option where one could
- return the 50 to 25 cable in trade for the required 50 to 50 cable.
-
- •The HyperCharger was easy to install and includes a control panel CDEV which
- allows the 68020 instruction cache to be turned on and off. The only current
- application we've discovered to be incompatible with any setting is Studio
- Session (word has it that a new version of that program will take care of the
- problem). MacWrite 4.5 works with a special setting in the CDEV - but MW4.6
- works fine without bothering with the setting. We haven't had the fortune to be
- able to compare timings with the SE/020/881 against a Mac II and have seen
- conflicting reports in the press about this (Byte says the II is faster;
- MacWorld's tests show the HyperCharged SE to be faster).
-
- One request with the 68020 board. It would be nice if the unit somehow sensed a
- compatibility problem and reverted to 68000 operation. Red Ryder Host, for
- example, won't run with the 68020's instruction cache (so much for a Mac II
- running LaserBoard), and requires that the instruction cache be turned off.
- Studio Session won't run either way and would require that the board be removed
- totally. Don't know if the request can be met given current technology, but
- maybe one day....
-
- Some of the GCC personnel are on-line on Boston's MacEast BBS (a superb BBS, by
- the way, at 617-776-8722), and have answered my questions, given helpful
- comments on utilities, and researched the problem with Studio Session for me.
- Their answers have been quick and accurate. In the two months we've been using
- the two units, both have been reliable and without defect. Can't ask for
- better than that.
